I love to hike around the lakes and reservoirs in the back country of San Diego. On my walks I see dragonflies, bees, cactus and amazing small colorful flowers, twisted trees and exotic waxy ground covers. So different from what I grew up with, it still fascinates me. I like to give the perspective of being above the lake, flying over with the curving diagonals you see from above. That is unique to me, in Virginia where I grew up you don't see things that far off in the distance when you are out in the woods. In this series I wanted to create the rich colors and textures of nature. I like to have things close up for inspection and then a view far away.

Impressions of Mission Trails

A Show by Cathy Carey of Impressionist Oil Paintings Paired with Haiku, Expressing the Changing Moods and Seasons of Mission Trails Park in San Diego , CA

"I named each of these paintings by writing a haiku expressing my thoughts and feelings as I prepared my paintings. This process helped focus my thoughts into certain colors or words that I wanted to depict in painted form. The intention of impressionism is to capture the nuance of light without relying too heavily on specific detail, while imparting an emotional sense of place. The structure of haiku is a very short form of poetry, traditionally using a special word that evokes a season. The idea is to suggest rather than describe. Haiku poems strive to express the fleeting world of the spirit through the changes noted in nature. I have combined these two art forms to express how feelings can be represented through color. In both the poems and in the paintings, the color creates the emotion."

Cathy Carey uses color to express emotion on many levels. By using complementary colors next to each other, you create a heightened sense of each color. Red makes green more vivid and alive. Blue makes orange seem even spicier and purple makes yellow glow brighter. By underpainting the complements under my final layers I wanted to create a richness of color. I also used the temperature of the color to support the color on top. If it was a hot day, I underpainted orange under the sky to create warmth. If it was a cool day I used cool colors underneath to represent late times of day and cool times of the year.
